All to play for going into final day at Hyeres

Semaine Olympique Française - Team GBR - All to play for going into final day at Hyeres
HYERES, FRANCE-(28-4-2005) There is medal potential for RYA team GBR going into the final day of Hyeres Olympic classes sailing regatta. Although some classes did not race on the penultimate day due to lack of breeze, the British team hold onto four medal positions going into the final day.

The classes that got out racing early on in the day managed to get additional races in but unfortunately for the Yngling and Tornado classes by the time they went afloat the thermal breezes had died away.

Team GBR sailor Helena Lucas continued her race winning form in the 2.4mR Paralympic class. Adding another two race wins to her score line, she has clearly dominated the class and is winning by eleven points from team mate Allan Smith. Fellow Brit Michael Cogswell had a good day in the light breezes scoring two second places, which moves up into third place overall. If the Brits manage to carry this result into the final day of racing, they could be occupying all three of the podium positions.

One race was sailed in the Laser class and Team GBR sailor Paul Goodison scored a third place which moves him up the score board into second overall. Milan Vujasinovi of Croatia leads the fleet by three points going into the final day or racing. An eighth place for fellow Brit Mark Howard sees him move up to eighth place overall.

The 49er class managed three races in the light conditions and although they scored their worst result of the regatta, a second and a fourth in the other two races saw British sailors John Pink and Alex Hopson move up into fifth place overall. Stevie Morrison and Ben Rhodes are the next best placed Brits in ninth place overall. Jan-Peter and Hannes Peckholt from Germany currently lead the fleet from team mates Marcus Baur and Max Groy.

With one race day left to sail there are a number of British sailors just off podium positions and in with a good chance of moving up towards the top of the fleet; Ed Wright is currently lying in sixth place in the Finn class - three points off fourth place; Lizzie Vickers is fifth in the women’s Laser Radial class; and Christina Bassadone and Saskia Clark are also placed fifth in the 470 women’s class.

Although they did not sail today, Sarah Ayton, Lisa McDonald and Annie Lush hold onto second place in the Yngling class, and after a disqualification last night for the Spanish pairing of Fernando Echavarri and Anton Paz, Rob Wilson and Mark Bulkeley move up to second in the Tornado class.

Tomorrow is the final day of racing at Hyeres Olympic Week and the race committee will be hoping to test a new format. All of the classes will sail one additional race before the top three in each class will race on a smaller course nearer to the harbour in a race-off for the podium places. The first boat to score two race wins will take the gold medal at the regatta. Further details and full results can be found at http://sof.ffvoile.net/gbr/news/home.asp?intitule=informations
